ABOUT

Prince (b.1978), the daughter of an architect and contractor, grew up in Eastern Washington exposed to museum art while building and working with her hands at home. Influenced by both of her grandmothers who grew up on working farms during the depression, Prince learned to identify what is truly garbage and what materials have a second life. In the intervening years of high school and undergraduate studies, she began to create work that crossed a wide array of media. As an undergraduate, Prince vacillated between ceramics, painting and dance and created her first large-scale mixed-media installation. Prince received BFAs from the University of Washington in Painting and Interdisciplinary Visual Art with a Dance minor and an MFA from Brooklyn College. While in graduate school, Prince was invited to visit Materials for the Arts, which introduced her to using reclaimed materials in her work. During this time she studied with Vito Acconci and created her first performance work incorporating reused materials. After moving back to Seattle and delving into advocacy work and social and environmental justice, today Prince creates paintings, sculpture, large-scale installations, and performances that address the social justice and environmental issues vitally important to our time. Inspired by this outward focus, Prince’s art is invitational and accessible, and asks each viewer to reflect on their relationships with others and the world. Prince lives in Seattle with her husband, three children and pup.
