I’m excited to announce I will be holding a Jean Body Engagement at Method Gallery.
Jean Body Engagements feature the continuation of Megan Prince’s Jean Bodies in which completed sculptures will be on view and a work in progress will be developed in a public engagement component in the designated space. Event attendees are invited to participate; bringing jean donations to the location and in the process of tying them together, creating one sculpture as a relic of real community and space for conversation around what reuse can look like in daily life. (details below)
Too often belonging and community become exclusive based on personal abilities, experiences and circumstances, in this instance the ability to see one's work. Throughout the Jean Body Engagements community members (residents, workers and visitors) are invited to participate in a variety of ways as they are able. Attending community members will be encouraged to take part in the engagements by showing up, holding conversation, bringing jean donations, touching and interacting with the in-process sculpture(s) and also by joining in the process of tying pre-cut used jean material together with me at each event. Each community member in attendance will be given a demonstration on the handworking technique and be invited to sit and create with the material to their ability and/or as they see fit. There will be two Method volunteers assisting in working with all community members during this event to ensure they feel comfortable doing this work with the end goal that the communities naturally come together, in pairs or small groups, handbuilding with the materials and having conversation about what it means to “see” the work. In this way creating artwork as relics of community in real time and holding space for conversation around belonging. Participants will leave truly belonging to the Jean Body Community and taking with them the important knowledge that they are not alone.
This event is FREE and open to the public.
